In a shocking incident, a man was mauled to death by a lion after trying to enter its enclosure at a zoo in Ghana. The incident happened on August 28 at Accra Zoo in Ghana’s capital.

Security guards on a routine patrol noticed the middle-aged man had scaled a high lattice fence and entered the restricted area, which contained a lion, a lioness and two lion cubs.

It is not yet known why the man climbed inside and the police are investigating.

“The intruder was attacked and injured by one of the lions, inside the inner fence of the enclosure,” the forestry commission said in a statement.

The statement went on to say that the man died from injuries he sustained in the attack at the Accra Zoo. The man’s body was recovered and taken to a nearby morgue after zoo keepers lured the animals into a safety hole.

A police spokesman said: ‘We are investigating the matter to establish how the man entered the restricted area.

Accra Zoo was first established as a private menagerie in the early 1960s by Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. Accra Zoo was opened to the public in 1966.

Lioness kills zookeeper

Earlier, a lioness killed a zookeeper as he fed her lunch, then escaped with her male partner before the pair were recaptured in Iran. The 40-year-old victim, identified only by his last name, Esfandani, was feeding a lioness when she and another lion managed to open their cage and attack him. IRNA said the news agency.

Police and guards captured the couple hours later at the zoo in the central city of Arak, some 200 kilometers southwest of the capital, Tehran.
