US urges Americans living or traveling in Russia to leave ‘immediately’

The US State Department on Saturday warned Americans to “leave Russia immediately” as the country continues to engage in war with Ukraine.

In a Level 4 advisory, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Russia said there are limited commercial flight options to ferry Americans out of the country.

“If you wish to leave Russia, you should make arrangements on your own as soon as possible,” the notice reads. “If you are considering staying in Russia, understand that the U.S. Embassy has serious limitations in its ability to assist U.S. citizens, and conditions, including transportation options, may suddenly change.”

The advisory says Americans are at risk of harassment “by Russian government security officials.”

The situation along the Ukraine-Russia border is “dangerous and unpredictable”, the advisory said.

The United States has imposed a series of harsh economic sanctions on Russia designed to reduce its critical cash reserves and cut the country off from access to financial institutions.

The sanctions have made it difficult to get cash, and the advisory from the US embassy and consulates in Russia says Americans can expect credit and debit cards to be declined as well. .

“US citizens should develop an alternative plan to access money and finance if they remain in Russia,” the notice reads.

Airlines are canceling flights to and from Russia, according to the notice. In various parts of Russia, airspace is restricted and several airports have closed due to the conflict.
